LEANDRA-Residents have called on municipal health inspectors to visit
business premises operating in the area regularly.
This came after they had seen a sewage drain overflowing with blood
coming from a local abattoir and butchery on 12 January.
The drain is situated on the left side of the gravel road leading to the
municipal technical department.
The drain was fixed when Echo visited the area on 18 January.
People who were interviewed on that day were not sure whether the
problem happened regularly.
"Not many people use this road.
"Only farmers and municipal workers use it,"said a resident.
A man from the abattoir and butchery called last Tuesday afternoon
and blamed the municipality about the overflowing sewage drain.
According to him this problem was reported.
Mr. Themba Motlhankana, head of Marketing and Communication of
the municipality, said their Department of Health and Community
Services is enforcing applicable by - laws to penalise guilty parties.
"We advise business and residents to refrain from putting foreign
objects in the sewer network.
"This practice causes major blockages and poses a health risk."
